Robert Swan, who is a British explorer, is also the first person in history to have walked to both Poles (and unsupported), and he is giving me the opportunity to be part of an expedition to Antarctica in early 2012.
This expedition has two goals:
1. Learning how and why climate change over there has immediate repercussions on the rest of the world. Make me become an Ambassador of Antarctica so I can help you, decision makers of today and tomorrow, make the right decisions.
2. Learning how to adapt to a very hostile environment, so that I can transmit to you all of the knowledge and skills.
On the 27th of February 2012, I will be joining other team members of the Inspire Antarctic Expedition (IAE 2012) on a 16-day expedition to Antarctica, the continent at the bottom of the Globe.
Some may ask: why go to Antarctica of all places?!
Is it for the 66 hour journey? Is it to develop social skills with the local inhabitants? Is it to learn how to get through a blizzard?
No, seriously, it is that: "as the last unspoiled wilderness on earth, Antarctica is currently protected by a treaty prohibiting drilling and mining until 2041. Decisions made today will impact our entire planet's ecosystem and the future of life on earth." Robert Swan, OBE.
Who is Robert Swan?
In a nutshell, Robert Swan's passion for Antarctica began at age 11. He dreamed of following the footsteps of Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton, and Roald Amundsen. He became the first person in history to have walked to both poles, at age 33. Robert has become the inspiring protector of Antarctica.
